An unprecedented 388 young pianists applied to participate in the 2022 competition. These were winnowed down first by a screening panel of pianists (142 applicants moved forward), and then by a screening jury who invited 72 applicants to Fort Worth for live auditions in March. The five members of the screening jury chose 30 competitors.
